The James Monroe Mavericks opened the 2017 football season with a bang on Friday night winning 44-34 over Greenbrier East. The Mavericks were led by the Mohler Brothers, Grant and Monroe, as they were responsible for two touchdowns; while junior quarterback Connor Moore stole the show scoring four touchdowns – all of which came in different ways.
The Mavericks rushed out to a 28-7 halftime lead Friday night as Moore
had a touchdown catch and an interception return for a touchdown by that point. Moore continued his path of scoring as he had a 8 yard touchdown run and 65 yard return for a touchdown as the Mavericks exploded to a 44-14 lead in the third quarter.
The Spartans did make a valant comeback scoring 20 unanswered points to get to the final of 44-34, but James Monroe was just too much on this night and Greenbrier East had several mistakes that hampered them from the start, despite racking up over 400 yards of total offense.
The Mavericks have now defeated their neighbor and rival Spartans three years in a row.
The Mavericks welcome Point Pleasant (0-1) to Lindside next Friday night as the Big Blacks were beaten on a hail mary pass by Mingo Central last night on their home field.
